For the launch of the new BMW X2, CABINAA asked Crossfade Studio to create a sound installation built around the interaction between human and machine. The concept was a live collaboration between a pianist and a self-playing piano, with the instrument inspiring the performer in a continuous human-machine feedback loop. To make it work, we developed custom software that listens to what the pianist plays on a Disklavier, interprets the incoming MIDI, then re-arranges and harmonizes it according to a strict set of rules. The result is sent back to the Disklavier, which plays it on its own, giving the pianist new material to react to. We also built a series of MIDI instruments placed at the pianist's disposal, so he could shape how the piano responded to his playing. By setting the tempo, the arpeggios, and how sparse or dense the machine's performance would be, the pianist steered the dialogue as much as he followed it. The piano stopped being a passive instrument and became a creative partner: what the pianist played shaped the machine's response, and the response in turn pushed the performance in new directions.
